Our Stories

"I would like to thank Pathways for a new way of life. You have provided me with shelter from the storms.  You gave me a new direction. Helped me get back connected with my family and friends. You enhanced my vision and growth.  So for all the family at Pathways: thanks, and keep up the good work."

Pathways to Housing DC was formed as a separate not-for-profit organization in 2003 by Pathways to Housing, Inc., to provide housing and services to chronically homeless individuals with serious mental illnesses living on the streets of Washington, DC.

Pathways DC seeks out the most visible and vulnerable segment of DC's homeless—those people living on the streets or other public places who have psychiatric disabilities, co-occurring substance abuse disorders, or other challenges. Pathways DC offers them immediate access to apartments of their own, without requiring participation in a treatment or sobriety program. Currently Pathways DC has housed more than 200 people in DC, with plans to house more than 150 in the next year.

Washington DC Features

In November, Pathways DC participates in the annual Help the Homeless Walkathon sponsored by the Fannie Mae Corporation. Long partner and supporter of Pathways DC programming, the Fannie Mae Foundation holds the walkathon each year to help prevent and end homelessness. It is the largest of its kind, with thousands of Washington-area residents converging on the National Mall for a 5K walk that brings together city officials, business leaders, and organizations such as Pathways and the clients we serve. Each organization develops mini-walks to raise awareness and money throughout the DC area. In 2010, Pathways DC organized two mini-walks with the staff and patients of St Elizabeth’s Hospital for our second annaul mini-walk event, to support those in DC’s state mental hospital who are most vulnerable to homelessness.
